E-Learning serious game for surgical skills training: Kheiron Training System


KTS LogoThe main objective of KTS project is to design, to develop and to validate a serious game and the supporting material in order to provide medical students and (novel) surgeons with an innovative ICT-based approach for training basic key psychomotor skills in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The KTS serious game will be based on existing training tasks accomplished in a box-trainer so surgical skills training process will be enhanced through ICT. This ICT-enhanced training system based on serious games will cut across traditional in-site training systems including open and distance learning and open educational resources. With the KTS project, medical students will have an earlier access to surgical training and (novel) surgeons will be able to train more hours without moving to specialized training centres, thus not only reducing time and costs, but also allowing for a more flexible approach to their training.


Minimally invasive surgical pedagogical model based on video technology enhanced learning: MISTELA


MISTELA LogoThe project's main aim is to establish a joint initiative in the development of a EU MIS pedagogical framework. It will comply with the specific learning needs of surgical professionals in order to enhance their competence on MIS skills. It will account for the necessary means to enable formal, non-formal and informal learning. A common MIS learning programme will also guarantee the essential accreditation standards at a EU level and facilitate professionals' mobility within the Union. A practical implementation of the model will be done. A Technology Enhanced Learning environment will be developed, providing collaborative context for MIS initial and lifelong learning, based on shareable, community-developed MIS video repositories. Collaborative and meaningful learning will be enhanced by an existing video-based authoring tool developed by members of the consortium, available for use by the community.


Online training course in biomechanics, medical devices and related European regulation (ToHealth)


logotohealth-960pxDue to the crisis impact on the traditional manufacturing sector (the manufacturing sector employs 35 million people in the EU), manufacturing companies must find new markets with products with a higher added value. One of these sectors is the Healthcare Technology. In this sector, companies can develop new healthcare products with high added value by applying the knowledge and expertise of their sector of origin. In order to successfully diversify to that sector and to do it in a relatively short period of time, one of the key points is the training of companies' staff in three main topics: Medical Devices regulation (EC Directives, Standards, etc.), basic knowledge regarding human body biomechanics, and knowledge regarding medical devices (biomaterials, joint prosthesis, fracture repair, etc.).

Moreover, due to the continuous changes in the medical device regulations (EC Directives, standards), is necessary to provide training in these issues to the staff of those companies which are already in the healthcare technology sector.

The expected outcomes of the project are:

- Course contents for Germany, Spain, Poland, and Italy in their respective languages and adapted to the needs of their respective company profile. The content of the course will be adapted to those companies that are seeking to enter the new sector, and those that are already in it.
- E-learning courses available through an e-learning platform.
- Dissemination materials in different supports and media.

Achieving expected results will lead to higher competitiveness of the European medical industry, in which 500.000 people are employed by 22.500 medtech companies (80% are SMEs) with numbers expected to rise.


Osteosynthesis for Surgical Management of Fractures for Orthopedic Surgeons and Biomedical Engineers


logo orthobiomedOsteoporosis is the most common cause of fractures, due to bone mass reduction and increased bone fragility. A significant increase of fracture cases is expected in the coming years as a result of population aging and increased life expectancy. A significant portion of the associated costs depends on re-interventions that are necessary to address failures of surgical techniques, usually caused by errors in the diagnosis of the fracture, in the selection of implants or preoperative planning. The increasing demand coupled with the large number of failures of surgeries determines the needs of better trained professionals able to address the growing demand in the field.

To respond effectively to these increasingly stringent demands it is essential that surgeons, biomedical engineers and residents can count on one hand on the latest knowledge in the art of biomechanics and application of implants and on another hand to upgrade their education with the objective to refine and adapt surgical techniques.

The project objectives are:
- Identifying and analysing the needs of biomedical labour market, of biomedical engineers, orthopaedic surgeons, managers, residents in the sector.
- Selecting and analysing the e-learning innovative content to meet these needs and upgrade the content with the new developments in the sector.
- Adapting, upgrading and implementing the Osteoform e-learning materials to the legal framework, training system, and language in Bulgaria and Greece and to the needs of the target groups in all partner countries.


New applications and course materials for prosthetic dentistry, implant dentistry and biomedical engineers (BIO-DENT)


logobiodentThe project aims to improve the quality of the implant implementation by providing new learning materials to dentists. The project relies on adapting eLearning as the innovative tool to increase the knowledge, quality, ethic rules and reach of better vocational training (EU priorities D.2.3.)

The goal is to give the clinician insight into the design process and biomaterial and biomechanical aspects of implant design. A clinician who thinks about dental implants from the design perspective will demand answers to the following
questions: What are the objectives for a particular dental implant system? What is the rationale for trying to achieve the objectives in the way proposed? Are the objectives achieved in practice?

The improvement of the employability and productivity of implants in today's labor market is directly related with the education of manufacturers and employees.

The project therefore aims to do the following:
- Conduct a needs analysis in all the partner countries in order to find out the necessities from the point of biomechanical view.
- to adapt the product from the lasted E-learning tool about spine surgery techniques for orthopaedic surgeons and biomedical engineers project
- to improve the access of education to related people who needs vocational training in the field of implantology.
- to develop different teaching methods both for manufacture and implementations of implants by clinicians.
- to develop new control mechanisms for the import of implants to our country and present this to related authorities.
- to find out new methods in order to improve the effectiveness of Turkish companies.
- to develop a curriculum, interactive web page and digital media.
